Forge print

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Here are a couple of signs on a wall in Greenfield Village, presumably advertising the fact that they have a forge and a printer’s shop.  Among many other things.  Great Art courtesy of my good old Minolta camera (recently re-batteried) and part of my famous Vacation series.

Two posts on two consecutive days!  That must be some kind of record.  At least lately, that is.

Unfortunately, today will be an Extreme Short Shrift day.  It’s already almost 11:30, and I haven’t done anything at all since I got home from work.

Well, that’s not entirely true.  I ate dinner.  Also ate dessert.  I grilled hamburgers for dinner.  Put some Sriracha on them.  They were hot.  Also good.  Also had extremely sweet corn on the cob.  Dessert was freshly-baked cookies with homemade peach frozen yogurt.  So things could have been worse.

We also practiced our golf swings and took a nice long walk.  Also read the news on my beloved iPad.

Got some great news and some terrible news from LRN2 this afternoon.  First the great news: he worked at his new job for the first time today and had a really good day.  I think it’s going to work out very well for him and both he and the boss will be glad he was there.  Congrats, LRN2!

Now the bad news.  His backpack with his beloved MacBook Pro was taken from the cafeteria at dinner this evening.  There’s good reason to hope it was a case of mistaken identity that will be corrected tomorrow, as he found an identical-looking backpack apparently abandoned right by where his was.  Sincerest condolences, LRN2!  Let’s hope things work out well tomorrow!

And it’s time for bed, as already mentioned.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news:  Beefy Crunch Burrito incident!

See you tomorrow.

Yosemite valley

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Here’s some mountains in Yosemite.  Great Art taken from the Yosemite valley and part of my famous Vacation series.

Not a lot to write tonight.  I went to a friend’s house this evening to participate in a quick Scouting Board of Review for a couple of young men.  Excellent young men, I might add.  My friend John was earning his third Eagle palm, a mere six days before his eighteenth birthday.  What a great young man he is.

Anyway.  Very hot day today.  It was much cooler out in the South Bay, of course, but still quite warm.  The air conditioning broke yesterday afternoon and then again today.  Today’s failure was accompanied by a burned belt, which made our steaming hot offices smell like burnt rubber.  I invited everybody to go home and work from there if they wanted, and I took my own advice.  Went home an hour early and worked on the train and then at home.

Had a nice weekend.  It was an off Friday, and we spent it getting all our weekend’s work done so we could relax a bit on Saturday.  I also found some time Friday to get into the pool, which was at about 78 degrees.  That’s swimmable, but barely, as far as I’m concerned.  I turned the pool heat on and kind of swam from one outlet to another.  The sun was out and very warm, and it turned out to be very comfortable in the water, after a brief getting-used-to-it period.  Wanted to get in again this evening, but I didn’t get home until after the sun had gone down and I didn’t have the heart to get into the 81-degree water.  Jacuzzified instead and enjoyed it.

Nothing else for tonight.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting Morrowlife Employment Agency job opportunity: monkeys in pirate suits!

See you tomorrow.

Carder

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Here’s a really cool Early American machine we saw at Greenfield Village – a wool carder.  I had no idea these things even existed.  It doesn’t look like something I’d like to get my arm stuck in.  Part of both my famous Machinery and Vacation series.

Extreme short shrift.  It’s really late and I should have been in bed about 45 minutes ago.  But I can find a couple minutes to blog.

Especially since I haven’t written at all this week yet.  Fortunately, not much news again this week.  LRN4 was set apart as Relief Society president on Sunday and she’s been pretty busy since then.  I’m still running at my normal speed.

Did I mention the blower on the spa broke again?  This time, the motor is dead – one of its brushes ground itself all the way down, and it didn’t look very easy to replace it.  So I decided to just buy another motor.  Good old Amazon had one available for about $230.  They also had the entire blower unit available for $212.  So I bought the whole thing.  It got here today and I suspect it’ll be installed by tomorrow.

Lots of other things to do this weekend.  Nothing really big, fortunately.  I need to wash all three cars, trim the lawn, fix the power button on the vacuum, do a bit of cleaning in the garage, straighten up my office at home, prepare my lesson for Sunday, and watch a whole bunch of technical videos I’ve discovered in the past week.  Seems like a pretty relaxing weekend, actually, especially since tomorrow is my off Friday.

Nothing else for tonight, so I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting food honor news:  meat hall of fame!

See you tomorrow.

Step right up

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Here’s an exciting opportunity for my Loyal Readers.  Step right up!  Great Art taken at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan and possibly blogged before.  Oh, well.  It’s late.  Part of my famous Vacation series.

Extreme short shrift.  Spent all my time this evening working on LDS Tools emails.  The glamorous life of a project manager.

I’m also being glamorous at work this week, as mentioned before.  I’m sitting in for my boss.  I predicted a reign of terror, and I was right.  Sadly, I’m the one being terrorized.  Who could have predicted that?  Lots of work, but I’m having a great time.

We got Galaxy Quest from Netflix yesterday.  I watched a bit of it tonight.  It’s lots of fun, although I don’t recall it being particularly well received by either the general public or the reviewing public.  Too bad for them.

Nice letter from LRN1 this week.  He’s bring transferred tomorrow.  I’m excited to see where he goes this time.

And that’s it for tonight.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this combination shocking food violence news and exciting Morrowlife employment agency job opportunity: Amish milk smugglers!

See you tomorrow.

Cold reader

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Here’s one more picture of LRN4 at Half Moon Bay.  Looks cold, doesn’t it?  It was.  Part of my famous Vacation series.

Wow.  It’s been quite a long time since my last post.  Lots of new stuff, so let’s get started.

LRN4 and I went to Salt Lake City last Wednesday for the Church’s annual LDS Tech conference, which was held on Thursday and Friday.  They had 400 people registered – twice what they had last year – but it looked like only about 200 showed up.  So they had about the same number of people as last year.  We only had a few in the LDS Tools iOS group, but we had a nice time together and got a tiny bit of work done.  Could have been better.  Should have been better.  But we did have a nice time.  Which counts for something.  A couple new people started working with us, one who was there and another who participated by videocon.

In today’s LDS Tools telecon, two more new group members dialed in.  Woo hoo!  One is even a highly skilled iOS programmer.  Something which we’ve been lacking just a bit.  We’re all getting good – some better than others – but we haven’t really had any people with a lot of experience.  So we’re glad to have him, along with the other new folks.

We visited with LRN2 on Friday and Saturday.  Had a really nice visit.  He’s doing great.  I surely miss him, but I’m delighted with how well he’s doing living on his own.

The drive back and forth was pleasant.  We took our friend Art, who spent the days there with his wife and kids.  The kids are all in school at BYU in Provo and Idaho, and the wife has been there since January.  They apparently had a really nice time together, and we had a pleasant drive.

The weather had a minor twist, though.  It was in the 70s on Thursday through Saturday, and we woke up Sunday to about six inches of snow.  The roads were just wet and a bit slushy, having been well warmed up over the previous few days.  The storm had come in from the north, apparently, so we were out of it within 45 minutes of our departure and had sunshine the rest of the way.  It was really nice here in Lardville.  Also was today and will be tomorrow.  Thursday and Friday look like cool temperatures and rain.  Which we don’t need right now.  But somehow the weather doesn’t seem to care what we need, does it?

Anyway.  Everything else is fine.  Work’s fine.  Commuting is fine.  Home is fine.

We’re having as many as twelve people to dinner on Saturday evening for a church activity.  We haven’t gotten confirmation from four of them, but the others are all committed.  Should be a nice time, if we can find someplace for everybody to eat.  Maybe in the garage.

Time for bed.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this combined shocking food violence news and exciting Morrowlife Employment Agency job opportunity: pecan rustler!

See you tomorrow.
