Another baptism

April 20th, 2011 by michael

Here’s LRN1 with his companion, a recently-baptized new member of the church, and a relative of that recently-baptized new member.  Not that I can’t remember any of their names, of course.  That’s LRN1 over there on the left, next to the relative.  Congratulations to all involved!  Part of my famous Guatemala series.

Wow.  It’s been quite a long time since I’ve written.  And there’s actually not that much new to talk about.  Let me think a minute here.  Nope, nothing comes to mind.  Been working, sleeping, eating, commuting, and doing a bit of iPhone programming.  That about covers it.

We have our tickets for the trip to Michigan during the Memorial Day holiday week.  We leave the Thursday before Memorial Day and return home the Thursday after.  Got a pretty good deal on the flights.  LRN4 did all the work, which I appreciate.

Oh, my Suburban was broken into sometime during this past weekend.  All they did was throw four rocks through the driver’s door window.  Didn’t get into the truck, didn’t open anything, didn’t steal anything.  Not that there was anything to steal, of course.  I don’t leave junk in my cars.  I don’t leave good stuff in my cars either, come to think of it.  Anyway, I had the window replaced on Monday morning, which was good, since it rained a bit on Monday afternoon.  There was glass everywhere inside that truck!  The window guy vacuumed up as much of it as he could, but there are still tiny shards of the stuff everywhere.  Our insurance company has authorized me to have the interior detailed to try to get it back into its previous glass-free condition.  They vandals also broke the power mirror switch on the driver’s door – presumably, a rock fell on it – so I need to take it somewhere to have that replaced as well.  Sometime in the near future, hopefully.  Very sad experience.  But it’s just a thing anyway.

Speaking of which, we have numerous friends and neighbors who have had their houses broken into lately.  I wonder if it’s related to the appalling economic conditions here in Lardville or just a sign of the times.  Either way, we’re feeling very fortunate that they only vandalism target we’ve had is the Suburban and not the house.

Today’s my brother Chris’s birthday.  Happy birthday, Chris!  He’s fifty years old now.  He told me he’s taking the same Mexico cruise in May that we took last year.  I expect he’ll have a great time, as we did.

My sister Julie’s birthday was the 12th.  Happy birthday, Julie!  I haven’t gotten to talk with her, sadly.  It’s already too late to talk to people on Eastern Time when I get home from work, and it’s tough to call her during the day.  I need to call for a very belated birthday greeting this weekend.

Speaking of the weekend, we’re scheduled to go see Madame Butterfly on Friday the 29th.  Should be fun, in spite of past less-than-stellar performances by our local opera company.  At least they’re still operating, which is a whole lot more than you can say for some pretty well-known orchestras and opera folks.  Also, they’re quite cheap.  So there’s that too.

LRN2 has finished his first semester at BYU!  He did quite well, by all accounts, and I think he’s enjoying himself as well.  We’re really proud of him and his accomplishments.  He mentioned the other day that he finally actually misses playing the organ.  I knew it would happen.

I guess there were a few things to talk about after all.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting Morrowlife employment opportunity:  biting, scratching monkey!

See you tomorrow.

Cold reader

April 5th, 2011 by michael

Here’s one more picture of LRN4 at Half Moon Bay.  Looks cold, doesn’t it?  It was.  Part of my famous Vacation series.

Wow.  It’s been quite a long time since my last post.  Lots of new stuff, so let’s get started.

LRN4 and I went to Salt Lake City last Wednesday for the Church’s annual LDS Tech conference, which was held on Thursday and Friday.  They had 400 people registered – twice what they had last year – but it looked like only about 200 showed up.  So they had about the same number of people as last year.  We only had a few in the LDS Tools iOS group, but we had a nice time together and got a tiny bit of work done.  Could have been better.  Should have been better.  But we did have a nice time.  Which counts for something.  A couple new people started working with us, one who was there and another who participated by videocon.

In today’s LDS Tools telecon, two more new group members dialed in.  Woo hoo!  One is even a highly skilled iOS programmer.  Something which we’ve been lacking just a bit.  We’re all getting good – some better than others – but we haven’t really had any people with a lot of experience.  So we’re glad to have him, along with the other new folks.

We visited with LRN2 on Friday and Saturday.  Had a really nice visit.  He’s doing great.  I surely miss him, but I’m delighted with how well he’s doing living on his own.

The drive back and forth was pleasant.  We took our friend Art, who spent the days there with his wife and kids.  The kids are all in school at BYU in Provo and Idaho, and the wife has been there since January.  They apparently had a really nice time together, and we had a pleasant drive.

The weather had a minor twist, though.  It was in the 70s on Thursday through Saturday, and we woke up Sunday to about six inches of snow.  The roads were just wet and a bit slushy, having been well warmed up over the previous few days.  The storm had come in from the north, apparently, so we were out of it within 45 minutes of our departure and had sunshine the rest of the way.  It was really nice here in Lardville.  Also was today and will be tomorrow.  Thursday and Friday look like cool temperatures and rain.  Which we don’t need right now.  But somehow the weather doesn’t seem to care what we need, does it?

Anyway.  Everything else is fine.  Work’s fine.  Commuting is fine.  Home is fine.

We’re having as many as twelve people to dinner on Saturday evening for a church activity.  We haven’t gotten confirmation from four of them, but the others are all committed.  Should be a nice time, if we can find someplace for everybody to eat.  Maybe in the garage.

Time for bed.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this combined shocking food violence news and exciting Morrowlife Employment Agency job opportunity: pecan rustler!

See you tomorrow.

Seafood parlor

March 25th, 2011 by michael

Here’s LRN4 in front of the Seafood Parlor.  Great Art taken at Half Moon Bay and part of my famous Vacation series.

Not many posts lately.  Busy week, though.  Let’s count it down backwards, shall we?

LRN4 and I went to the Manteca Stake luau this evening.  Wore a Hawaiian shirt and huarachis and had a nice time.  They roasted a pig, which was tasty.  Nice company too.  It was a well-attended event, although very sparsely attended by our ward’s membership.  Pity.

Worked from home today.  The ACE trains weren’t running and we were expecting some nasty weather, so I opted to stay home.  Got several things done.  And it was nice to be here.

Drove home from work yesterday.  No fun.  It took just shy of three hours.  I had gotten some mysterious texts from the ACE people saying they were arranging bus and taxi transportation home for people.  I took that as a bit of a warning and drove.  It turns out there was a mudslide in Niles Canyon sometime on Thursday, and nothing was getting through.  I sincerely hope they have it fixed by Monday afternoon.  Have to drive the Suburban back on Monday morning, so that won’t matter.

We’ve had an amazing amount of rain – for this area, anyway.  There’s a bit of minor flooding in various areas and the pool keeps getting too full.  Disaster level: low.  Inconvenience level: low to moderate.

Looking forward a bit, tomorrow’s supposed to be our annual trip to Great America.  I’ve really been looking forward to it.  Don’t think we’ll go, though.  It’s supposed to be 57 degrees and raining.  So maybe next year.  On the positive side, LRN12’s back home from her other grandparents’ house and she and her mom will be coming over tomorrow.  Ought to be a fun visit.

And now for some Very Important News: Morse Trainer is up!  Grab a free copy, Loyal Readers!

And I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news: cake-related shooting!

See you on Monday.

Half Moon marina

March 22nd, 2011 by michael

Here’s the marina at Half Moon Bay.  Pretty picturesque place.  Part of my famous Machinery, Vacation, and Bird series.

Missed another few days.  Had a nice weekend, although we didn’t really get much done.  The weather was windy and rainy and we pretty much stayed around the house.  I did finally get my new app done and submitted to the App Store.  Haven’t heard from them on the review yet – I hope to have it available for download within a couple of days.  Check out a screen shot here.

Otherwise, not so much going on.  LRN4’s website continues to grow.  She’s still not getting as many visitors as she’d like, but she is at least generating a bit of buzz among her friends on Facebook.  I think she’ll get where she wants to be with it.  Check it out, Loyal Readers.  And leave a comment.  That’s an order.

It’s Friends of Scouting time!  Aaaarrrrrrgh!  I’m in charge of collecting the money this year.  So Knuckles, Bruiser, and I will be making the rounds.  “Nice house you got here, lady.  Be a shame if something happened to it.  How much are you planning to donate to Friends of Scouting this year?”

And that’s about it for tonight.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news:  frozen beef assault!

See you tomorrow.

Bay bird

March 16th, 2011 by michael

Here’s a bird at Half Moon Bay.  Sitting on the dock of the bay.  Part of my famous Bird series.  Also part of my famous Vacation series, of course.

Busy day.  Incredibly busy.  Got up, got dressed, commuted, went to meetings, went to a going-away luncheon, went to more meetings, commuted, ate dinner, and sat down to blog.  What does the immediate future hold?  Finishing blogging, maybe a bit of reading, and going to bed.  Ah, the glamorous life.

Still, it wasn’t a bad day.

I’m listening to a few Karen Carpenter songs on Grooveshark as I write this.  My goodness, she had a beautiful voice.  And she sang some beautiful songs.  It was really uncool to like her music for a long time.  I hope those days can be over.  Doesn’t really matter, though.

And I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this (hopefully not previously blogged) shocking food violence news: Polish sausage fight!

See you tomorrow.
