Birthday girl

January 17th, 2011 by michael

Here’s LRN12 on her birthday.  Well, actually I think it may have been close to her birthday.  What difference does it make?  She got her presents and cake.  What a cutie.

Quick post tonight.  I missed a whole week there while LRN4 and I were out of town and there’s lots to talk about, but its already getting a bit late and I still have lots to accomplish tonight.

Let’s talk about that first, shall we?  Need to assemble LRN4’s new office chair.  She got it at Costco today, using our annual Executive membership rebate coupon.  Cool!

I also need to start disassembling the footstool that goes with my new thinking sofa.  We got it (for free) from a friend.  It’s a bit (well, a lot, actually) stained, so LRN4 has decided to recover it.  I need to take the lid off of the footstool, which has a pretty large amount of storage inside it.  Then she can get to work.

We also need to coordinate our calendars.  And that’s about it tonight.

Had a great week last week.  We went to Salt Lake City for my iPhone development training class, which I greatly enjoyed.  I think it was quite useful, although it would have been even more useful if I had zero experience.  It was definitely at the 101 level.  I was one of the least experienced iPhone programmers there, and at least the first half of the week was too simple for me.  But it was still worth going to.  A whole week of Appley goodness.

One of the other really good things about it was getting to know the church’s iPhone programming team, who I’ve been working with for these last several months.  Nice people, all of them.  And quite talented.  Plus fun to be around.  I like them all.

Another of the volunteers in the class was a guy I knew way back when we lived in San Diego.  He’s still there and it turns out that he’s one of the major volunteers – very experienced and talented.  It was great getting back in touch.

We took LRN2 out to dinner a couple of times, and also took him to the Salt Lake Auto Show on Friday night, which was fun.  He’s doing great – better than he thinks, I suspect. He’s meeting people, working hard, and having a nice time at school.  We really miss him.

Also enjoyed staying with the in-laws again, of course.  They’re really hospitable people and lots of fun to be with.

Time for other things.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this encouraging food anti-violence news: seeing meat!  Note that this is totally different from seeing people as meat.

See you tomorrow.

Fountain

January 7th, 2011 by michael

Here’s LRN4 in front of the fountain in front of the science center we visited on Christmas Eve.  Part of my famous Statue series.  Sort of.  Is a fountain a statue?  That one is.

Missed a few days.  Been very busy.  Had a nice off Friday.  Went to a few stores with LRN4, went to the library and checked out a few books to take to Utah next week, went out to both lunch and dinner, and went to Bass Pro to walk off some of that food.  Also goofed around a fair bit here around the Secret Undisclosed Location.  Good day.

Also wrote a letter to LRN1.  I sure miss him.  I can’t believe he’s only one month away from being halfway through his mission!  It seems like he just barely left.  He’ll be back around the old Secret Undisclosed Location before you can say the Secret Undisclosed Word.  Probably because you don’t know the Secret Undisclosed Word.  And neither do I, but I can make one up.  But you still won’t know it.

Anyway.  It’s late and I want to go to bed.  So I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting food violence crime-fighting news:  pumpkin-tossing crime fighter!

See you on Monday.

Elephant fan

January 4th, 2011 by michael

Here’s LRN2 with an elephant statue at the zoo in Michigan during our vacation a few years ago. That’s LRN2 there in the back.  Magnum!  Part of my famous Statue series.

No posts for a few days, as usual. Been a good week or so. First, the big news. LRN2’s in college! We dropped him off on Saturday. He reports he’s enjoying himself and he’s doing well. We miss him! He attended his first classes and got his first homework assignments today. He also had a job interview today. Good luck with that one, LRN2! I’m sure you’ll find something good. If not, I’m sure you’ll find something like I had in college.

In other news, I went back to work today. Moment of silence, please. Fortunately, everything’s good there. It’s a three-day work week for me, which is always nice. Then I’m headed back to Utah for another week. I got invited today to a training class there that goes Monday-Friday. Didn’t expect to be going back so soon, but I’m really excited about the class.

Nothing else to report. I’m hanging around the loft watching an old episode of Monk – back when he was good. Nice quiet evening.

And it’s time for bed. I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news: goldfish fry!

See you tomorrow.

Telescopers

December 30th, 2010 by michael

Here are LRN2 and LRN4 looking through telescopes at the Lawrence Science Center on Christmas Eve.  It was a pretty day and the view was nice – San Francisco Bay and environs.  The Science Center was okay – really meant for little children, but there was enough interesting stuff to keep us entertained for a couple of hours.  We enjoyed a great fish taco lunch at Rubio’s afterward.  Great Christmas Eve activity.  Great Art courtesy of the exclusive iPhone-cam.  Special cameo appearance by LRN5 there in the background.

Not much posting the last while.  We’ve been busy.  Had a nice Christmas as well as a nice Christmas holiday.  One more day at home, after which we leave to take LRN2 to college, after which we come back, after which I go back to work.  Sigh on just about all counts.  Other than the trip to visit LRN4’s family, short though it will be.

I finally received my iPad case on Christmas.  Love it!  It makes the iPad a lot easier to carry around.  Also got some nice clothes and a few other nice things.  Very good Christmas.

We’ve had a few things to repair this last week or so.  My cable modem was slowly dying, which explains the extremely frequent dropouts in our internet service.  Also the extremely slow service.  So I ordered a new, much better one.  It took about half an hour to get the Comcast people to recognize it, but I got it successfully installed.  Now our service is extremely reliable and really fast.  At least comparatively fast, anyway.  I’m happy with it.

The washing machine has crapped out as well.  Fortunately, LRN4 found a YouTube video with a guy showing how to fix the exact same problem we have.  We’ve ordered a four-dollar part, which is on its way.  It’s a really easy installation (knocking heavily on wood here) that should only take a few minutes.  I already partially disassembled and cleaned it and verified we do have the problem we think we have.

I also got the rebuild kit installed on the kitchen faucet, with LRN2’s help.  It took maybe half an hour, the parts were free (lifetime warranty), and the instructions were quite clear.  Easy fix.  We didn’t even have to remove the faucet or get under the sink for anything other than shutting the water off.  Cool.

Let’s see, what else?  We undecorated the house today.  Unusually, we hadn’t even gotten sick of the Christmas decorations yet, but we’re glad to have it done anyway.  Only took a little while and it’s good to have the place back to normal.  I suppose.

Time for dessert.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking, umm, smurf violence news: rasta-bashing Glaswegian smurf!

See you tomorrow.

Baikonur bedroom

December 23rd, 2010 by michael

Here are my quarters during one of my trips to Baikonur.  I get this picture out every once in a while to remind me of one of the many reasons why I’m glad I don’t go there anymore.

No posts for quite a while. I keep getting busy. And/or lazy. Whatever.

Lots of stuff going on. The vacation is going great. Lots going on. LRN4 and I spent several hours working on her website last night. Stayed up way late.

We all went to the movies on Tuesday. It was scheduled for Monday, but we decided to go out to dinner in honor of LRN2’s graduation. Good meal. And a nice evening. The movie was great – we saw Megamind. Very cute. And highly recommended.

Let’s see, what else has been going on around here? Umm . . . we’re having the annual family film festival right now. Junior Miss is on right now. What a great movie. I’m kind of hoping we have an intermission afterwards for lunch. I have a stack of about ten movies for after that. We’ll see what we get to.

Other things. Hmm. Oh yeah, LRN5 and LRN12 have moved! They’re now in a much bigger and better place. We’re supposed to go over there sometime on Christmas Eve to drop off some furniture and have a look at the place. Then LRN5 is going to the museum with us. LRN12 is unavailable for the museum trip because she’s with her dad for several days. They went to Disneyland sometime in the last few days, I understand.

I can’t remember which museum we’re going to right now. Just a sec, I’ll ask LRN4.

I’m back. It’s the Lawrence Hall of Science. Supposed to be interesting and good fun. I’ll let you know.

And then it’s Christmas. Oh, joy! Maybe we’ll play a manly game or two of charades.

Lots more planned after Christmas too. Fun, fun, fun.  Plus shooting.

Time for more movies.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news: muffin assault!

See you tomorrow.
