Corn maze

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Here’s LRN4 at the end of the corn maze we visited several days ago.  That map looks a little bit complex, but it was further complicated by the fact that you had to find all ten pieces of it in mailboxes throughout the maze.  There were all kinds of other things to find too – they had answers to the crossword puzzle you see there, along with cornfield trivia and a few other fun things.  I’ve seen more technically well-done mazes, but this one was fun, what with all the extra things to find and do.  Recommended.  Although it’s too late this year.  And we won’t be here next year.  But still recommended.  Great Art courtesy of the exclusive iPhone-cam and part of my famous Hiking series.

We have a new Loyal Reader!  It’s been a long time.  LRN3 informed me that his friend Chris (not to be confused with LRN23, who is my brother, I think) (that is, I know he’s my brother, but I think my brother is the person who I previously identified as LRN23) has been reading the blog.  I have no idea why he’s reading, but I’m delighted he is!  Welcome, LRN30!  Leave a comment!  That’s a big milestone for the blog.  At this rate, we’ll be at 50 readers within three or four more years.

Anyway.  We weathered Hurricane Sandy last night just fine.  No real impacts here – the lights flickered several times but never went out, the rain was steady but never hard, and the winds were high but never destructive.  They were destructive at my office, though – I counted somewhere between 25 and 30 [amazon asin=B0052EL9YU&text=trees] either knocked completely down or broken in half.  That’s a lot of trees on one campus.  The office was closed all day yesterday and this morning.  Schools were closed both days.  Everything should be pretty much back to normal by tomorrow, except for the people still without power, of which there are apparently a lot.  Things should get back to normal for them within a few more days.  Hopefully!

In other news, LRN4 and I are going back to [amazon asin=B001LU1SFO&text=Hawaii] next March!  We’re going on the same ship and to the same places we went during our 2011 cruise, but I really enjoyed that one and expect to enjoy this one just as much.  And our (non-Loyal-Reader but very good anyway) friends Doug and Connie are coming too.  We’re excited about that.  By that time, we hope to be firmly ensconced in our house in Las Vegas, so it’ll be especially nice to be with Doug and Connie.  We’ve cruised with them twice before (Alaska and Mexico) and enjoyed both times.  Lots of time left before we sail, but it’ll be on us before we know it.  I hear March is a good time of year to go to Hawaii.  I’m pretty sure any month is a good time of year to go to Hawaii, though.

Version 2.0 of my Morse Trainer app was released this past week, and there have already been over 400 upgrades!  That means that people are not only downloading my app, but some of them are actually keeping it on their iDevices!  I couldn’t be more delighted.  Well, I guess I actually could be more delighted: there could be thousands of people using it and they could have paid me for it.  But other than that, I’m absolutely delighted.

And I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news:  tofu explosion!

See you tomorrow.

Weinermobile

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Here’s LRN4 with the Weinermobile.  Great Art taken at the Henry Ford Museum and part of my famous Machinery and Vacation series.

Long time no post.  I’ve been busy again.  Although I haven’t really done anything to speak of.

LRN4’s away at girls’ camp this week.  Hopefully, she’s having a great time.  I’m doing fine.  Had sushi twice so far.  Ate a bunch of Spam, eggs, hash browns, and biscuits.  Also had some frozen dinners LRN4 bought for me.  They’re low-fat and actually tasty.  I especially enjoyed the tamale.  No complaints in that department.

Doesn’t seem like I’ve gotten anything accomplished, though.  Did a bunch of LDS Tools work and umm . . . not much else.  Spent some more time working on OS X Lion, did a bit of reading, and worked.  Also ate.  And slept.  But not enough.  Sleeping, that is.  I did plenty of eating.

And I think I’ll got to bed already.  So I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news: Blizzard assault!

See you tomorrow.

Bucket man

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Here’s an actor begging for money.  Note the money bucket to his left.  Fortunately, this was before the show started.  Details below.  Great Art courtesy of my good old Minolta Dimage X, which finally got new batteries on the very afternoon of the play.

That old camera is great.  The quality of the pictures is, umm, questionable and it’s only a 2 megapixel camera.  But it slips in a shirt pocket and is great for taking pictures on the run.  Of course my iPhone also has a 2 megapixel camera, but it has no flash.  So there’s that.

Wow.  Ten days since my last post.  I don’t know if that’s a new record, but it’s way too close for comfort.  Must . . . blog . . . regularly.

Lots going on.  As mentioned above, LRN4 and I went with some friends to see Romeo and Juliet at CSU Stanislaus.  It was actually pretty well done! Fortunately, it was way better than the opera version from a few weeks ago.  It was their annual free Shakespeare under the stars night, so the price was right.  Although this year’s begging level was embarrassing.  I don’t mind being asked to give, but the constant haranguing was pathetic.  By the time it was over, I was pretty much expecting “Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though, Romeo?  Deny thy father and give a generous tax-deductible donation in the buckets going around the audience right now!”

Anyway.  We had a nice time.  It was a beautiful, warm day that turned into a beautiful, cool night.  We had jackets and blankets.  Our friends had a blanket to share, but hadn’t thought to bring jackets, so they were a bit chilly.  Still, a good time was had by all.  We’ll probably be there again next year.  By the way, it turns out that Romeo and Juliet isn’t a comedy.

Let’s see, what else is going on?  LRN12 has been here since Wednesday morning.  We’re having a nice time.  She goes back home tonight.

I sat in for my boss again Wednesday through today.  It was a bit busier than last time – more meetings and a few issues to take care of, but I enjoyed it.  I hope he enjoyed his vacation, which was apparently up in the mountains where there’s no cell phone coverage.  Sounds like the perfect vacation destination.

Speaking of which, LRN4 and I are planning to go to the Sunol Regional Wilderness tomorrow to do a bit of exploring and maybe some hiking around.  We have a bit of free weekend time these days and we’re not camping anymore, so we thought we would spend some time in some of the beautiful parks around here.  I’m really looking forward to it.

Nothing much else new comes to mind, so I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking toilet news: trapped deer!

See you on Monday.

Rusted partner

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Here’s the lunchtime entertainment at the first day of the recent LDS Tech conference.  Artistically backlit Great Art courtesy of the exclusive iPhone-cam.

Extreme short shrift tonight.  Need to get to bed.  I have to wake up in 8 hours.

Did I mention yesterday that I’m the boss at work next week?  My boss is on vacation.  The reign of terror begins on Monday.

Not much else new.  I’m delighted to report that the Suburban hasn’t been broken into since Monday.  Great news!

LRN4’s out making costumes for the big dance festival in June.  I expect her back any minute.  Was on my own for dinner.  Had eggs/cheese/salsa/tortillas and an English muffin.  Also a bowl of ice cream and a couple of Girl Scout cookies.  Simple, nourishing, delicious food.  I think they were the best eggs I’ve ever eaten!

And I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news: iced bun car attack!

See you tomorrow.

Dam buster

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Here’s LRN2 breaking a dam and letting all the poor little people downstream go to their watery fate.  Those must be some pretty small people.  Also, that’s a pretty easy dam to break.  Great Art taken at the science museum we visited on Christmas Eve, whatever its name was.

Anyway.  No posts for a week.  Yet again.  I’ve been busy, as usual.  On the other hand, there’s not much to tell.  Yet again.  I’m getting up, commuting, working, eating, programming, and going to bed.  Things could be worse, though.

I have been spending quite a bit of time on the old programming gig.  Mostly, I’ve been working on LRN4’s website.  Some refinements are still needed, but it’s looking good and working well and it has gone live!  Check out Shannon’s Book Nook!  And tell a friend.  Tell lots of friends.  Buy all our playsets and toys.  Do it now.

I’ve also made good progress on my new iPhone app.  Got the UI done, with the possible exception of some simple graphics for the background.  Now I have to figure out how to get a datastream into it.  From Twitter to you.  That’s my plan.  I found an API that ought to get me what I need.  Just have to figure out how to implement it.  I’m hoping to spend a few minutes on that tonight.  I’d like to get the app done and submitted within a week or so.

Then on to my next app idea.  Don’t have one yet, but I’m sure something will come to me.  I think I need ideas that have a bit more mass market appeal.  Also that will make me filthy stinking rich.  So far, only I’m filthy and stinking.  Two out of three!

We’ve had a bit of nice weather here in Lardville for the past week or so.  It’s been sunny and quite warm, considering the season.  The weekend days were pretty much at or a bit over 70 degrees, about which I can’t complain.  Turned quite windy today, with the high maybe up to 60.  It felt positively cold.

I stayed home from work today with a bit of a sick stomach.  Feeling much better by this evening, so I’ll be back to work tomorrow.  I enjoyed lazing around a bit.  Maybe a bit too much, in fact.  Just exactly when can I retire?

Had our friend Art over for dinner again last night.  He’s spending his Monday evenings with us until his wife gets home, which might be a few more weeks.  We enjoy his visits.  Last night, he brought a bunch of stuff he collected during his mission to Japan a few many years ago, and he gave us a very interesting little briefing on the subject.  Really enjoyed it.

Well, that’s about it for today.  I’ll try to get back to writing every weekday.  In the meantime, I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting Morrowlife employment opportunity:  airport-dwelling monkey!  (Bonus secondary employment opportunity: monkey-adopted raccoon.)

See you tomorrow.
