Seated reader

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Here’s LRN12 sitting on the sofa a couple of months ago.  Thought my Loyal Readers might like to see how she’s grown in recent times.  I think she may have been singing or something.  Maybe trying to catch flies – who knows?  Great Art courtesy of the exclusive iPhone-cam.

Two posts in a row!  That’s something of a record, at least recently.

Not that there’s anything to say.  Worked, ate, and commuted.  I slept in by an hour this morning – simply too tired to get up.  Worked an hour late as a result, so now it’ll be that much harder to get up on time tomorrow.  But I have to.  Have a few early meetings.  In fact, I think I’ll be in meetings nonstop from 9:00 until about noon.  And then a few in the afternoon too.  Ah, the glamorous life of a manager.

Great news!  LRN2 found out today that he’s received a half-tuition scholarship to BYU for the Winter semester and Spring & Summer terms.  Congratulations!  Of course, he hasn’t received his acceptance letter yet, but I think we can pretty much assume that’s going to happen at this point.  Either that, or this is their way of making people feel good without having to actually spend any money.  Just award a scholarship and then don’t let them in to spend it.  Brilliant!  I’ll have to use that little trick at the future University of Mike.

Anyway.  Worked on the iPhone app on the way home this evening.  I got a lot done – the timing calibration code is pretty much done and working perfectly, and I believe I’m using the calibration values properly in the Receive function now too.  I also started implementation of the background noise sensitivity calibration function.  Things are moving along swimmingly!

Helped LRN4 get her website set up yesterday.  She’s working on her first post right now.  We just have a default WordPress template in there so far.  I think she likes its general appearance, but we have a lot of customization to do.  It’s not time to start publicizing it yet, so I’ll refrain for now.  She’ll have to pick a couple of beta testers for it soon – any Loyal Volunteers?

And that’s about it for tonight.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting Morrowlife Employment Agency job opportunity: cider-loving kangaroo!

See you tomorrow.

Another baptism

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Here’s a picture LRN1 sent us this week.  He’s the on the right there, next to the guy with the white shirt, pants, and tie.  That guy’s the bishop.  The new member is the other guy in white, as my Loyal Readers might have guessed on their own.  Great Art courtesy of . . . umm . . . somebody in Guatemala with a camera.

Happy election night!  It looks like some good, some bad.  Won’t know local details for a while now.  But I think I’m pretty satisfied with the outcome, for the most part.

Working on LRN4’s new website tonight.  We bought a domain name and I’ve gotten WordPress installed.  Still have to wait for the URL to link to the website throughout the World Wide Tubes.  Might take until tomorrow morning.  Then we can get her set up with a theme and customize it.  These things take a day or two.

Otherwise a pretty normal day.  Got some work done, commuted, worked on my app just a tiny bit.  Watched an episode of Top Gear and a Get Smart on the way home in lieu of working on the app.  I’ll get back to it tomorrow.  I’ve been working hard on the church app and I just wanted a break.  Fortunately, I know how to do what I want to do to my app right now, so I can get it done on the train.

And that’s about it.  In honor election night, I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting Morrowlife Political Employment Opportunity: felonious mayor!

See you tomorrow.

Daytime beach

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Here’s a daytime look at the Santa Cruz beach and that old concrete ship.  Great Art courtesy of the exclusive iPhone-cam and part of . . . umm . . . none of my famous series.

No post yet again yesterday.  I was working on the iPhone app.  But this time it was the church iPhone app.  Got a fix done!  You can now delete a photo.  It’s all making sense to me now.

We got a letter from LRN1 today!  Apparently, he bought a nice new planner with his birthday loot (along with a bit of a stash of candy) and it comes with a free brass nameplate.  But it has to be ordered from and sent to an address in the good old USA.  So he asked us to take care of that for him.  Not much of a letter, I admit, but it was still nice to hear from him.

Not much else new.  It’s gotten quite a bit cooler around Lardville.  It was even cooler in Sunnyvale this morning, though.  I heard there was a bit of frost on the pumpkin out there, although my car was only covered with dew – no ice yet.  Still, it was very chilly.

On the other hand, it was sunny and pleasant most of the day.  Can’t complain.

LRN12 is here for the week, as previously reported.  She has spent the evening (and apparently much of the day) deeply engrossed in several episodes of Wonderpets.  I’d say that show is a bit . . . predictable.  That seems to be LRN4’s least favorite show, unfortunately.  It appears to be pretty much all LRN12 wants to see these days.  Just a little bit of friction around here today.  But they’re having a great time.  They went to the park today, which has to be LRN12’s favorite place, possibly even including the Costco hotdog stand.  Also the Costco free sample carts.

And I want to get back to programming.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this combination toilet news and exciting Morrowlife employment opportunity: porta-potty football player!

See you tomorrow

Descending rocket

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Here’s the result of last Thursday’s launch.  Looks pretty good, no?  That thing worked exactly as designed – a testament to visionary engineering, good solid construction, and rigorous testing.  Plus a pinch of luck.

Greetings from the train!  It was a beautiful day today, after a rainy, cool weekend.  The neighborhood barbecue was nice and relatively well attended, but it was held in our garage.  It rained, as expected.  Still, we got to know a few people and had a nice time.

No post last Friday.  Got busy with the app.  As usual.  And then I spent most of the rest of the weekend goofing around.  Oh, well.  I’m doing this for fun, you know.

Anyway.  Got released from my calling on Saturday evening.  It was announced on Sunday.  I can’t say I’m disappointed, but there are regrets.  Always are.

Heard from LRN1 on Saturday, as usual.  He sounds good and is working hard and enjoying himself.  He was supposed to have a baptism of a long-time investigator on Sunday.  I’ll be interested to heard how that turned out.

Not much else going on.  Work continues to be quite busy and enjoyable.  Home is uneventful and peaceful.  Check that, I just remembered that LRN12 will be here for the week.  I’m delighted to have her come stay with us for a while, but I think the “uneventful and peaceful” comment will have to be withdrawn.  It’ll be good fun, if maybe a little less sleep than usual.

And that’s about it for today.  I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this shocking food violence news: sandwich assault!

See you tomorrow.

Card game

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Here are a whole bunch of Loyal Readers playing . . . umm . . . some kind of card game.  I have no idea what.  Great Art courtesy of my trusty old Minolta camera (long since retired) and taken many years ago (New Year’s Eve 2002, to be exact) in our house in Virginia.

No post yesterday – never got around to it.  I’ve been working too hard on my iPhone app.  Which is making good progress, but still has pretty far to go.  The more I do, the more I realize I still need to do.  But it’s fun.

Won’t make me rich, though.  That’ll come with my next app, for sure.  Absolutely

Life is otherwise fine.  LRN4’s having her book group meeting here at the Secret Undisclosed Location this evening.  They sound like they’re having a nice time.  They read a book by Julia Child this month and had one of Julia Child’s dessert recipes to go along with it.  It was delicious.  Now that’s a good book group.

And I’ll leave my Loyal Readers with this exciting Morrowlife employment opportunity: Nazi-fighting Polish army bear!

See you tomorrow.
