Readers with Brigham

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Here’s a group of Loyal Readers hanging around with Brigham Young. He’s the bronze-colored guy in the back. Picture taken during yesterday’s drop-off session. Part of my famous Statue series.

Extreme Short Shrift tonight. It’s late already.

Visited Loyal Reader Number One once more. We dropped off his suit and visited for a little while. He’s having a great time, has met lots of people, and is already incredibly busy. Have a great semester, LRN1! We’ll miss you. We miss you already.

Also visited Loyal Reader Number Four’s aunt and her husband (which I guess makes him her uncle, or at least step-uncle, but since her original uncle, who passed away unexpectedly a while ago, wasn’t a blood relative either, the current uncle is just as much an uncle as the late uncle. Or something like that.) and had a great time. He’s very friendly, witty, and a genuinely nice man. She’s also a family favorite.

Otherwise, slept, ate, and relaxed. Appropriate for vacation. Worked on our hosts’ desktop computer a little more. There’s still more of that to finish up tomorrow, along with a good amount of car maintenance I hope to accomplish. We’ll see. There’s also a visit and lunch with LRN4’s dad and stepmom and LRN4’s dinner out with friends from Virginia, which I may have mentioned I’m not invited to. Sheesh.

Anyway. See you tomorrow.

Odd faces

Here’s one more look at that bizarre statue in downtown Sacramento. I have no idea how much they paid for this, but they didn’t get their money’s worth. Poorly-lit photo courtesy of the exclusive RAZR-cam. And part of my famous Statue series, of course.

The pickup‘s here! Well, not exactly here. Technically, it’s in Sunnyvale right now. It’s waiting for me to get home from my various vacations. I do have the key and the owner’s manual here, though. Already read the manual. Of course.

I like the truck very much. It needs to be detailed inside and out, but everything works great and it will look great soon.

Vacation starts tomorrow. No posts Thursday or Friday – they haven’t extended the Intertubes into the woods yet, as far as I know. Posting will probably be limited next week, although I expect our non-Loyal-Reader relatives in Utah will have some kind of network to which we can connect. If so, there will be posts. If not, you’re on your own, Loyal Readers. Stay tuned.

And there’s not much more to say tonight. Had a nice day. Commuted, worked, ate, participated in a panel discussion, ate, worked, commuted, ate, read the owner’s manual, ate, and watched a little TV. The usual.

Have a great weekend. See you … umm … soon.

Out of the water

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Here’s a bizarre sculpture we found out in the middle of the street in Sacramento, right outside the theater we visited a few weeks back. I’m still having nightmares about the little head growing out of the side of the big head. And won’t someone help that poor woman who’s about to drown? Picture taken with the exclusive RAZR-cam.

Came home sick this afternoon. I’m still feeling terrible – very upset stomach and possibly a fever. I came closer to barfing today than any time since my infamous food poisoning incident at Baikonur. I really need to be back at work tomorrow, so I’m hoping the stomach will cooperate. The flesh is willing, but the stomach is weak.

Interesting comments on yesterday’s controversy. Having thought about it a little more, I think I may agree with Loyal Reader Number Three. For five hundred bucks or so, I could probably be convinced to wear that monstrosity. Just not in public.

And of course I share Loyal Reader Number One’s concern about the fires threatening Big Sur. We may have to find another place to camp next Spring Break. On the other hand, they may be offering tremendous discounts.

And I don’t feel like writing anything else. So, we’ll go with today’s controversy: do you believe this? Interestingly, on the website where I found a link to this article, most of the comments were about people whose friends are faking their interest in religion. I think they missed the point. Among sincere believers, I suspect a lot have happy marriages. Lots more than unbelievers. What do you think?

Whew. That came pretty close to being serious. I’ll do better next time, Loyal Readers. See you tomorrow.

Odd Buddha

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Here’s a very strange Buddha. I don’t exactly remember where it came from – probably a restaurant, based on its surroundings. Part of my famous Statue series. Courtesy of my junky famous RAZR cam.

Well, we’re back from The Island. Had a great time. The boys had fun in the canoes, in spite of the weather, which had a part in the group declaring victory a little prematurely. Loyal Reader Number Four and I had a good time doing the logistics and everyone went home tired and happy.

Back to work today – it was busy, busy, busy. Which is good.

Our friends the Smiths have invited LRN4 and I to go on a cruise with them later this year. They’re going to the Mexican RivieraAcapulco, Puerto Vallarta, and a couple of points in between. The cruise leaves from San Diego and takes nine days. I’m tempted. We need to decide in a day or two, as they’ll be buying their tickets this week. The price certainly seems favorable right now. Maybe it’s another casualty of the gas-crunched travel industry. And every other industry, come to think of it.

No controversy today. That beer commercial one really took it out of me. I’ll try again tomorrow.

No time for any more. See you tomorrow.

Mauled reader

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Here’s the followup to that bear statue picture the other day. Loyal Reader Number Two looks to be in pretty bad straits. Don’t worry, Loyal Readers – we eventually got him out of there. Part of my statue series.

Tough night on the train. The train ahead of us hit somebody and had to stop for the police and ambulance response, of course. Then there was all the paperwork. We’re running over an hour late so far. The good news is that we’re moving again. Sigh.

Otherwise a good day. The heat appears to have broken, at least in the South Bay. Loyal Reader Number Four told me it was still pretty warm at home, which is how I like it.

No news from the Honda dealer. I’m as nervous as a cat. I’m supposed to get it back tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed, Loyal Readers.

Speaking of which, how nervous are cats? They’ve always seemed like quite sensible animals to me.

Yesterday’s controversy appears to have generated some vigorous debate. About as vigorous as it gets around here, anyway. Some think we should get the tank back. Not to mention washing it for us. The reason being that they were the ones to get it all dirty by burying it. Others think we ought to leave it there, what with the environmental cleanup involved.

I’m still searching for some middle ground. Maybe we should demand it back and then refuse to accept it when it gets here. We don’t want to get too obnoxious, though. They might ask for their statue back.

Today’s controversy: Political news. And more political news. Controversial question: which is more pathetic?

See you tomorrow.
